The Challenge

The farm faced a 35% crop loss year on year due to weather incidents, stemming from the fact that the peppers were planted under a fixed shade net structure that slowed evaporation during prolonged rains. Thus, they needed a solution to prevent losses and modernise their farming methods to increase yields.

The Solution

  • AgriLogiq supplied a turn-key natural ventilation climate control solution for three of the 1-hectare blocks.
  • A quick turnaround was required to be ready for planting in January.
  • Each hectare required 28 venting motors whereby AgriLogiq supplied their smart motors specifically designed to lower energy costs.
  • This meant a total of 84 motors were required to operate the three hectare and thanks to our smart technology, this only required 15kw of power, translating to 40amps three phase across all three poly-tunnel greenhouses.
  • To read the environmental data on the farm, a single external station was set up reading wind speed, wind direction, temperature, relative humidity, VPD, absolute rain, and total rain fall.
  • In conjunction with these, two internal stations were set up to monitor for variations in the poly-tunnel
    greenhouse, reading internal temperature, relative humidity and VPD.
  • Alongside the motors and weather stations, our climate controller with its software and remote accessibility was deployed to manage the structures.

Results

  • Working hand in hand with the farmers, we set up the climate strategies to target different outcomes in the early morning over the day and at night.
  • We also set different plant stage growth strategies to help facilitate the different types of growth over the season.
  • We carefully made use of the sun safety feature to block the harsh light when the plants were small and allow more when required.
  • The rain eye sensor enabled the client to react with the system within 20 seconds of a drizzle – this is a key feature in high rainfall areas.
  • The result was zero losses and an increase of almost 50% in yield from shade to automated poly.
