Take full control of the climate

The Challenge

The client’s existing structure was outdated, had poor energy inputs, and lacked the technology to utilise the greenhouse effectively. Moreover, the existing controls were unable to manage multiple variables or account for condition setting. Consequently, the staff were not equipped to manage and optimise the greenhouse asset that was purchased.

The Solution

  • The AgriLogiq team took control over the existing equipment by replacing the controller with our ZoneLogiq solution.
  • This provided remote access to work with the farmer over the next few weeks to stabilise the facility.
  • We added two internal stations which monitored environmental temperature, relative humidity, VPD, CO2, PAR as well as bed temperatures.
  • Once we had measurement and control, we could adjust the climate strategy to suit and advise on adjustment of devices.
  • We added a new low pressure misting system to enable relative humidity increase with high speed and low speed control on the misters to inject the exact amount required rather than a single stream.
  • We added variable speed options to the fans to allow for more control over the airflow.
  • We replaced the wet wall pads and roof plastic to get better energy inputs from the two components.
  • We added a curtain behind the wet wall to close it at night for better nighttime temperatures and lower day/night differentials for early-stage plant growth.
  • We added night covers to the plant beds to lower the energy requirement from the heat pump.
  • We added a motorised vent to accelerate fresh air replacement.
  • We added circulation fans to even out the natural diffusion of hot and humid air.

Results

  • We commissioned and trained the staff on setting climate strategies specific to requirements of the greenhouse.
  • We trained staff on early veg to late veg optimal climate and watering cycles, bridging the understanding between system control and crop management.
  • Ultimately, we halved the growth time for the cuttings to be planted out and therefore doubled the production of the plants.

Wet walls

Definition: A system consisting of a porous wall that water is pumped across, cooling the air as it passes through the wall.

Use case: A wet wall system is typically used in fully closed greenhouses as a cooling mechanism where natural venting is not possible.

CO2

Definition: Carbon dioxide or CO2 is a naturally occurring gas that is produced through natural processes such as the respiration of living organisms, volcanic activity and the decay of organic matter, as well as the burning of fossil fuels and certain industrial processes.

Use case:Carbon dioxide is one of the primary materials required for photosynthesis and adequate CO2 levels are essential for optimal plant growth and development.

Misting solutions

Definition: Refers to a system of nozzles that spray water into the air in the form of a fine mist to help control the climate of an area.

Use case: Can be used in greenhouses as a mechanism to regulate air temperature and humidity to provide optimal growing conditions for the plants.
